Food Security vs Food Sovereignty

Purple Greens Farm was created to help my Massachusetts community reach food security AND food sovereignty.

🤔 What is food security?

– Focuses on peoples’ ability to access adequate food

– Understands food as a traded commodity and hunger as the result of insufficient production and lack of access

🤔 What is food sovereignty?

– Focuses on food producers’ right to determine local food systems

– Recognizes food as a right and understands hunger as a problem of food governance, unequal distribution and injustice

– Puts small-scale farmers and other food providers at the centre of the food system and highlights relationships between communities and nature

🥕 Food security makes sure you have the ability to buy healthy food near you.

🙌🏾 Food sovereignty is about empowering people

It ensures that the people who grow and eat the food make the important decisions about food and agriculture. That’s me and you!

👩🏾‍🌾 Purple Greens Farm is doing both.

We do this by transforming local lawns into productive gardens, creating beautiful produce micro-farms that are both solar-powered and utilize recycled rainwater. We manage these gardens for property owners, enabling them to keep 10% of their harvest while the rest is sold to neighbors within a five-mile radius.

Purple Greens Farm is currently raising money for our 2026 growing season. If you are willing and able, we would appreciate your help. Your generosity will help purchase supplies, helping us expand our micro farm to meet a growing demand for fresh foods.
